Position Description

Application Engineers act as the liaison for technical information between Briggs & Stratton and Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) customers.  They are responsible for testing and evaluating customers’ equipment to ensure the power system is properly applied, troubleshooting, making recommendations to customers, and providing direction to technicians performing electric power system/engine setup and testing.  Although this role will require understanding and working with our entire product line, the primary emphasis of this role is on electric power source systems – lithium battery, BMS, motor, controller, and accessory components. 

Job Responsibilities

  1. Under the direction of the Application Engineering Manager, serve as a technical liaison providing electric power system/engine application information to Briggs & Stratton OEM customers and internal divisions/business units.
  2. Specify system and component level requirements for the power system to properly match the application.
  3. Evaluate customers’ equipment in application engineering labs and provide direction to technicians performing electric power/engine and equipment set up and testing.
  4. Conduct electric power systems/engine installation reviews and recommend modifications to customers’ electric/engine powered equipment, when required, to ensure acceptable electric power system/engine performance and durability.
  5. Use standard engineering techniques including root cause analysis to resolve customer concerns.
  6. Represent the Application Engineering Department on new product development teams acting as the voice of the customer.
  7. Organize and conduct information exchange meetings and technical reports with OEM customers, technology partners and internal divisions/business units 
  8. Some Domestic/International travel to customer facilities is required.

Job Skills Requirements

  • Familiarity with battery and small engine technologies, and the applications that they power.
  • Knowledge about battery monitoring systems, electric motors, controllers, CANBUS signaling, and calibration is preferred.
  • Knowledge about electronic fuel injection systems and electronic throttle control is preferred.
  • Technical competence with test processes and test equipment to ensure that the B & S electric power systems and engines perform well end-product applications.  This includes data acquisition, interpretation, and the development of new test methods for unique products.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, solve problems and resolve issues in a timely, practical, and cost-effective manner.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills to deal effectively with diverse groups of people at our OEM customers and our internal divisions/business units.  
  • Organizational skills and flexibility to handle multiple projects and the ability to prioritize new projects as they arise.  Must be self motivated.
  • Prior experience utilizing different battery technologies, including lithium ion, is preferred.


Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Related field

Experience Requirements

  • Three years of professional engineering experience

Physical & Environmental Requirements

May require travel of a scheduled or urgent nature to review applications, discuss problems, visit suppliers / customers, trade shows, etc.
