Counsel - Product and Intellectual Property Attorney

Position Description

Briggs & Stratton seeks a talented attorney to join its legal team. This Product and Intellectual Property Attorney will work closely with company leaders to develop and implement key intellectual property and product strategies. This role will act as the key advisor collaboratively engaging with cross-functional teams throughout the product lifecycle as well as lead the Intellectual Property (IP) function and the Products Compliance and Safety team of engineers and professionals. This role will report to the head of the legal team and operate independently and proactively in a fast-paced and growing environment. 

Job Responsibilities

  • Shape and execute Briggs & Stratton's intellectual property strategy to align with company initiatives and business direction
  • Collaborate in close partnership with the new product development, research and development, and marketing teams
  • Oversee Briggs & Stratton's global intellectual property portfolio including the filing, maintenance and/or protection of Briggs & Stratton's patent, trademark, copyright,  domain names filings and enforcements and other intellectual property assets
  • Supervise internal and external resources to conduct various design reviews, intellectual property searches, and clearances through a variety of databases
  • Manage outside counsel on intellectual property and product related disputes and litigation activities
  • Advise on IP-related matters in connection with commercial and other transactions
  • Provide counseling on trade secret and confidentiality-related matters
  • Train and educate business partners on IP matters
  • Lead the product compliance and safety team.
  • Manage and work with outside counsel on a variety of matters including product liability litigation, claims substantiation, risk assessment, and regulatory updates.
  • Advises on license, software, consulting and confidentiality agreements, as well as intellectual property issues in purchasing, sales, marketing, and manufacturing transactions
  • Provide guidance on matters including but not limited to anti-trust, product safety, customer claims, labeling, and supply chain issues.
  • Help develop and implement new processes, policies and training as needed, based on legal and regulatory requirements, industry standards and best practices.
  • Work collaboratively with paralegals, in-house attorneys, and business clients
  • Maintain flexibility and readiness to take on other duties as assigned

  • Creative problem solver able to deliver clear, strategic advice to clients in a timely manner.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Detail-oriented, organized, responsive to client needs
  • Proven capability to balance a variety of high priority projects simultaneously
  • Solid computer skills including extensive knowledge of specialized software related to assigned area(s) of responsibility
  • Fluent in English and primary language used in area of responsibility and/or location


  • Juris Doctor (JD) from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum eight years of experience as an attorney (or equivalent substitute experience) in a firm or corporate setting.
  • Admitted to practice law in State of Wisconsin, or another U.S. state.
  • Intellectual property management experience.
  • Engineering Degree and/or experience, preferred.
