We're seeking a strategic supply chain professional to fill our Category Manager opening. The position will make significant contributions to our supply chain strategy, taking ownership of assigned areas and help develop the supply chain organization at Briggs & Stratton into the future. The position works out of our corporate office with the opportunity to be remote up to two days per week. 

Position Description

Leads a set of commodities in the development and implementation of strategic sourcing activities across the enterprise.  Executes the strategic sourcing process for assigned commodities by data gathering, identifying suppliers, quote preparation, supplier qualification, and gap analysis to make robust decisions regarding supplier selection and sourcing needs.  Develops global commodity sourcing strategies, is responsible for managing supplier relationships and performance, and leads cost reduction for assigned commodities.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Evaluates broad purchasing practices, quotes and reviews cost/price and value analysis to select, reviews alternative suppliers

  2. Builds and manages high level supplier relationships: communicates supplier performance & gaps to goals, and outlines improvement to ensure business objectives are met

  3. Ensures supplier training for relevant processes and procedures

  4. Establishes and manages strategic sourcing goals and metrics for cost reduction, supplier performance, and sourcing decisions.

  5. Researches and evaluates the benefits of contracts, open-market purchases and out-sourcing

  6. Negotiates, writes and verifies legal issues of supply agreements

  7. Recommends and implements changes in processes or procedures for assigned areas

  8. Defines, resolves, and provides permanent solutions to systemic supplier performance issues.

  9. Leads continuous cost reduction / value improvement activity by developing and executing projects, competitively quoting, conducting negotiations, and developing/executing cost models.

  10. Develops and implements communication plans to key stakeholders.

  11. Performs other duties as assigned

Job Skills Requirements

  • Comprehensive knowledge of strategic sourcing and supply strategies, purchasing function concepts and of supplier commodity processes and practices

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for report writing, presentations and interactions with diverse groups of people inside and outside of the corporation

  • Proficiency with SAP

  • Ability to work in a team environment and to build and manage business relationships

  • Ability to lead sophisticated partnership arrangements

  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes and component applications, Statistical Process Control and other significant quality management techniques

  • Strong knowledge of basic Geometric Dimension & Tolerance (GD&T) principles

  • Fluent in English and primary language used in area of responsibility and/or location


  • Bachelor's Degree in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, Business Management or related field.

Experience Requirements

  • At least five years of experience in purchasing or related field
  • At least two years of experience in areas such as: category management, supplier development, supplier relationship building, and/or strategy development experience
  • Ability to travel as needed 10 - 20%
  • Experience with rubber and/or chemical related commodities preferred
