Briggs & Stratton is seeking a Senior Cost Accountant to support the Turf & Consumer business in Sherrill, NY. This individual will report to the Finance Director and work closely with the accounting team responsible for supporting the business unit. This position offers the opportunity to work in a hybrid environment, with a remote opportunity up to two days per week once established in the role.

Position Description

Responsible for supporting cost accounting, inventory controls and other accounting functions. Prepares and creates journal entries and reports to assist with month-end closing, costing, daily operations, and other financial analysis. Formulates and administers approved accounting practices throughout the organization to ensure that financial and operating reports accurately reflect the condition of the business and provide reliable information necessary to control operations within the assigned entity.  

Job Responsibilities

  1. Analyzes and updates system to ensure accurate production cost, inventory and labor variances throughout the month.
  2. Performs costing of purchased parts, service parts and resolves AP discrepancies.
  3. Assists with month-end closing by calculating accruals, booking journal entries, reclasses and other system adjustments. Reviews account details and follows-up on month-end closing items when necessary.
  4. Prepares reports daily, weekly and monthly which may include but not be limited to production cost, inventory, spend and other metrics.
  5. Performs standard cost roll at year-end to ensure standards are accurately updated
  6.  Coordinates review of inventory balances and inventory monitoring programs.
  7. Works with functional managers throughout the company to identify opportunities for improved efficiencies and offer recommendations for improvement.
  8. Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Skills Requirements

  • Strong analytical skills and knowledge of analysis techniques that assist in report preparation for decision-making purposes
  • Thorough understanding of general accounting functions as well as cost accounting and standard cost setting
  • Advanced organization skills necessary to manage multiple assignments and priorities
  • Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills for interface and communicate with diverse groups
  • Desire to grow into a leadership role
  • Strong computer literacy, especially experience with financial software systems
  • Fluent in English and primary language used in area of responsibility and/or location


  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance OR equivalent education and experience

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of five years of related Accounting/Finance experience required
  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment preferred
  • Proficiency in MS Excel
  • SAP experience preferred

Compensation Data

For this New York United States-based position, the expected base salary range is $62,000 - $71,000 USD commensurate with experience. Actual compensation within that range will be dependent upon the individual's skills, experience, qualifications, and applicable laws.
